SIPA Special Event:
Developing your Inner Leader for Life Success
11th May 2013 Event of SIPA
A conversation with yogi, mystic and visionary humanitarian Sadhguru Founder Isha Foundation with serial entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist B V Jagadeesh.
~ Summary by Malavika Lakireddy
SIPA, TiE and Isha foundation jointly hosted a discussion with the esteemed Sadhguru on the topic “Developing your Inner Leader for Life Success” in Palo Alto, CA. To a packed auditorium, B V Jagadeesh, the well -known Silicon Valley entrepreneur, led the discussion with Sadhguru to bring out the secrets for being a leader in all facets of life. Sadhguru answered breadth of questions from Mr. Jagadeesh and the audience with real life examples and a healthy dose of humor.
On taking an organization from ordinary to extra-ordinary
ISHA foundation is a completely volunteer run organization with over 2 million members. Though at times not equipped with the right skills, the volunteers have taken on tough projects with gusto and completed them on time. Sadhguru shared his secret to building a dedicated organization – first fall in love with the people and then make them fall in love with you. Every human being wants to do their best. To make them give their best, each individual should become first happy with themselves, whether they are doing something big or small. Once the fire is ignited in each individual, then all it needs is to be channeled in the right direction.
On being successful in life and tackling obstacles
Sadhguru shared that the dissatisfaction and anxiety in today’s world is because we have become a goal- oriented society. An analogy Sadhguru gave is that if we want to grow an apple, we have begun to think only of the apple and not of the soil, the roots, water and the manure which are critical in growing that apple. Our expectations are out of touch with the efforts we are putting in. The key is to first gain the necessary skills, put in the effort and enjoy doing the work. Then everything else will follow.
Sadhguru also honed in the philosophy that it was important to do what we love and do it well. We need not be the experts in everything, or take on tasks such as volunteering to be politically correct. We have to do the work with a focus on ensuring we are giving back more than we are taking and keeping the human factor in the center. Then, whatever we do will end up benefiting the society.
On developing leadership skills
Sadhguru firmly believed that leadership should not be an aspiration, but a consequence. He summarized three principles in developing individual leadership.

Is India's competitiveness in software services a good platform for developing an IT product industry in software or hardware? For many decades, this seemed to be a far-fetched notion. However, in the past few years, a range of product companies has mushroomed in the Indian environment. Some of them are linked to global markets either through sources of funding or vendors. Most sell into the domestic environment, although some plan to use their domestic experience to go global The panel will explore whether the growing Indian domestic market, the export of services, or other aspects, such as increasing foreign direct investment are beginning to change this, and what we might expect in the next few years. CEOs and other executives from a number of Indian Software Companies are visiting the US in May. SIPA has organized this special event for its members to interact and network with these companies and determine where the next professional and entrepreneurial opportunities are.

Big Data is transforming multiple industries and markets, resulting in innovations in infrastructure, data management platforms and a wide range of multi-screen software applications and services – i.e. data analytics, business intelligence, collaboration, mobile, vertical applications and many more. Big data initiatives are cropping up across multiple industry and market sectors. Where are the information layers and synergies to bring this information together so they can be put to meaningful use? Three significant digital technologies are converging to redefine this: social media, mobile, and big data. As smartphone and tablet adoption continue to expand rapidly, the number of consumers using big-data driven services (eg. location-based mobile services) will proliferate. Greater usage means greater data collection. This panel will provide insights into how these technologies will enable marketers and businesses to provide ever more hyper-targeted services.
February 2013 Event of SIPA
SIPA hosted an eclectic panel of speakers from Big Data advisors to key decision makers in companies to share the trends on Big Data Analytics.
Event Moderator: Piyanka Jain - CEO, Aryng
Panelists: Naren Patil - SVP Marketing, NGData Peter MacKenzie - Head of West Coast, Think Big Analytics Nader Fathi - EIR at Plug n Play, Formerly CEO/Founder of SIgmaquest Sameer Chopra - VP, Advanced Analytics at Orbitz Worldwide
The panel was posed some tough questions –Is Big Data hype or real? Have companies been able to monetize the value of big data? What are the deterrents preventing companies from adopting Big Data technologies? And finally how can the audience benefit from this new trend in their careers?
On Big Data Hype
Overall, the key takeaways were that Big Data is here to stay, and so is the need for data scientists. To get value out of this evolution, start with the business problem and then apply the new technologies to it.
To further enhance your knowledge of Analytics and Big Data, our partners are providing training and webinars .

Q&A
March 2013 Event of SIPA
SIPA hosted esteemed speaker William C. Miller from Value Centric Innovation (VCI) enterprise to share their research on the new age Business Model Innovation. William is based out of Bangalore, India and California, USA where he has worked with global companies enabling top down innovation leadership along with bottom up innovation work. Combining the management principles of West with the holistic philosophies of the East, Value Centric Innovation aims to maximize the value of all stakeholders, not just the financial goals of the shareholders. In this session, William shared some techniques for fostering innovation for long term results.
4-4-4-8 Process
William shared his 4-4-4-8 process of Business Process Innovation –
4 Contexts: Choose the paradigm which will drive the business model
4 Goals: Integrate the outcomes you strive for
4 Innovation Styles: Think innovatively in 4 ways
8 “P” factors: Apply innovation thinking to each aspect of the business model
8 “P” Factors
The 8 “P” factors – Principles, People, Product, Process, Planet, Partners, Prosperity, Proposition, constitute dimensions of value based business model.
William shared examples of successful companies who differentiated themselves from their competition by choosing to make 1-2 of the “P”s part of their core business goals. For e.g. Charles Schwab & Co. made “Principle” i.e. conducting business with high ethics and with no conflict of interest with the customer the core to its business. In the industry which is rife with brokers being paid on commissions and driving the customers to make more transactions, Charles Schwab innovated a new model wherein the brokers were paid a fixed salary and hence had the customer’s best interest always at heart.
Similarly, Grameen Bank in Bangladesh focused on making “People” ‘s life easier. It not only made financial products available to those in need and ignored by traditional systems, but also made the community or people aspect of it central to delivering the product. This led to an unprecedented success for such a model which is now being copied all over the world. Fuji – Xerox’s focus on “Planet” and reducing resource usage and emissions led it to innovate on an entirely new recycle model for its product. The audience also shared their examples of companies like IBM and P&G which made People central to their business model.
4 Contexts
William urged the group to evolve from a rationalistic paradigm i.e. focused on wealth and power for shareholders and owners to holistic and spiritual based paradigms which focus on prosperity with accountability for all stakeholders. From the Eastern philosophy, integrating with 4 goals of life – Dharma – Harmony with nature, Artha – Prosperity, Kama – reaching goals and desires and Moksha-human excellence with the business goals will lead to a sustainable business.
4 Innovation Styles
Finally, William gave a unique framework to innovate -the four pillars of innovation style
Visioning: What is the ideal long term solution?
Modifying: What can we do refine and optimize what we have already done?
Exploring: What would be radically new and different?
Experimenting: What can we combine to put together a new solution?
Combining the 4 innovation styles with the 8 “P” factors gives a solid tool kit for innovating in every aspect of business.

Educational technology is the study and ethical practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using and managing appropriate technological processes and resources.
The major shift in learning from print based to digital technology has provided new frontiers to innovators and social entrepreneurs to explore new and improved teaching methods that will ultimately facilitate reversal of the country’s educational downward spiral back to a position of stature and leadership again.

The last 12-18 months was a period of economic turmoil rarely seen in recent history. Anything that could have gone wrong, from the economic standpoint, did go wrong. We have weathered the worst and that the long road to recovery has already begun. Silicon Valley has seen its share of ups and downs, even before the time it was called Silicon Valley. Who would have thought that after the dot com bust companies like Google, YouTube, MySpace, Facebook and so many others could have flourished. Every disruption in times long gone and recently has led to innovation. In the past several decades technology has reshaped society. It is highly possible that now the circumstances of our society will drive the business and technological innovation of tomorrow.
Without doubt, the road to recovery will be long and hard. The standard business rules might not be as effective. There is a new playbook that each one has to play by. So how do we as professionals evolve in this new economy? Will there really be new business models? Has the entrepreneurial paradigm changed? Do we as professionals need to learn new tools and technologies? Where does the next opportunity lie? What is the future of the economy and what are the economies of the future?
As someone said recently, however one chooses to answer these questions, it will be wrong. But we have to make a start and start with a thoughtful discussion. At Silicon Valley 2010 and beyond, we are going to give you that start. With keynotes from some of the most respected business leaders, to panels of some of the experts already sketching out parts of the new roadmap, to motivators who will provide us with the necessary tools to succeed in the new tomorrow.

5. Leverage - They are not only players but they are making this a core part of their business and personal lives. They can't live without it and more importantly, they know how to get the right return on their investments in social media

Panelist: Megan Casey, Chief Editor of Squidoo
Megan is a founding member and the Editor in Chief of Squidoo.
Before starting Squidoo, Megan spent 6 years in book publishing, the first half at Random House, the next at the Portfolio business books imprint of Penguin Group, USA. There she developed pioneering marketing and technology books from the likes of John Battelle, Seth Godin, Bo Burlingham, Rod Beckstrom and Ori Braufman and Dave Balter - among countless others.
Megan is now widely regarded as one of the most inspiring community leaders online (and, irrelevantly, the youngest). She is also a user experience and marketing consultant for several author websites, and once upon a time ran her own author website development company.
Megan's favorite parts about Squidoo are their Org 2.0 movement for charity, putting the community in charge, the totally arcane topics that show up on lenses, and the fact that there are actually dozens of incredible lenses on zombies.
Panelist: Himanshu Jhamb, Founder Active Garage
Himanshu Jhamb is a co-founder of Active Garage (www.activegarage.com) where he has taken a lead role in bringing together business experts sharing their knowledge and insights (in various formats) to help entrepreneurs and business owners get an edge. Himanshu's first book (co-authored with Guy Ralfe) - "ProjectManagementTweet" is being released in late 2009. Himanshu has a graduate degree in Computer Science from Bombay University.
While Himanshu is not "tinkering" at ActiveGarage, he enjoys honing his Project Management skills or strategizing with a game of chess while listening to Pink Floyd.
Panelist: Gary Swart, CEO of oDesk
oDesk has an active blog (www.odesk.com/blog), Facebook page (facebook.com/odesk), and Twitter account (@odesk) - as well as a vibrant and interactive community in the site's own forums. The conversations engaged through these channels include hiring strategies, freelancing tips, technical help and industry commentary - allowing oDesk to respond in real-time to their users questions and concerns. Social media gives oDesk new opportunities to offer users guidance and create a sense of connection within the oDesk community.
As the leading marketplace for online workteams, oDesk users are Web-savvy, computer-oriented and increasingly driven by social media. Not only are users inclined towards social media communication, buyers are looking to oDesk to provide access to social media professionals, and hiring for providers with social media skills has been on a recession-resistant upswing - for example, the number of jobs requesting skills to manage corporate Twitter accounts have skyrocketed in the last year: http://www.odesk.com/trends/Twitter.
CEO Gary Swart can speak directly to oDesk's involvement in social media, and why companies are hiring people that are skilled in leading social media conversations and developing applications for social networks.

We have heard that recessions are the best time to start your own startup. For entrepreneurs who have been on the path, it may be straight forward to get started. What about the rest of us? There are so many engineers with bright ideas, but don't know how to start.
The current macroeconomic climate presents unparalleled opportunities for those that can thrive with constrained resources. Many startups are now following the Lean Startup process. The Lean process was created by Toyota in the 50s. The Lean Startup embodies similar principles as applied to the startup process. The Lean Startup is a practical approach for creating and managing a new breed of company that excels in low-cost experimentation, rapid iteration, and true customer insight.
Eric Ries, a co-founder of IMVU, is a strong proponent of this process and very successfully used it at IMVU. He will share the key principles of making sure you get your startup idea off the ground and stay on course.
If you are an engineer with bright ideas, consider Lean Startup to build confidence while building your startup.
1. Identify a profitable business model faster and cheaper than your competitors.
2. Continuously discover what customers want to buy before building or making follow-on investments in new features.
3. Ship new software at a dizzying pace: multiple times a day while improving quality and lowering costs.
4. Build a company-wide culture of decision-making based on real facts, not opinions.
About Eric
Eric Ries became a Venture Advisor at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, after co-founding and serving as Chief Technology Officer of IMVU. He is the co-author of several books including The Black Art of Java Game Programming (Waite Group Press, 1996). While an undergraduate at Yale University, he co-founded Catalyst Recruiting. Although Catalyst folded with the dot-com crash, Ries continued his entrepreneurial career as a Senior Software Engineer at There.com, leading efforts in agile software development and user-generated content. In 2007, BusinessWeek named Ries one of the Best Young Entrepreneurs of Tech. He serves on the advisory board of a number of technology startups including pbWiki, Bunchball, FooMojo, Causes and KaChing.

Power of Virtualization in Enterprise Computing
As today's CIOs and IT managers rise to the challenge of using their enterprise computing infrastructure as cost-effectively as possible while remaining responsive in supporting new business initiatives and flexible in adapting to organizational changes, Virtualization has become more and more important.
A fundamental technological innovation that allows skilled IT managers to deploy creative solutions to such business challenges, Virtualization is a methodology whose time has come. The fast-emerging age of Grid Computing is enabling the virtualization of distributed computing, of IT resources such as storage, bandwidth, and CPU cycles. But Virtualization can also apply to a range of system layers, including hardware-level virtualization, operating system level virtualization, and high-level language virtual machines.
In short, Virtualization is fast becoming a key requirement for every server in the data center, enabling workloads such as server consolidation, efficient software development and testing, resource management for dynamic data centers, application re-hosting and compatibility, and high-availability partitions.
Let us listen to the exciting panel of experts in Virtualization.

Globalization has increased demands for business transparency, the rule of law and universal standards and norms. In addition, some advocate expansion of managerial goals beyond shareholder profits to include social responsibility to multiple stakeholders including employees, environment, local economy and neighbors. Moreover, governments and NGOs press for more regulation, including financial securities, privacy and information protection, homeland security and export restrictions, money laundering and corrupt practices, IP protection, quotas and tariffs, environmental and human rights, wage and union rules, and occupational safety.
This month's panel will grapple with the following questions:
1) How should a corporation conduct its operations when laws, standards and values of the home country conflict with those abroad?
2) Should corporations work for improvement of civic society in each country, or stick to bottom line concerns?
3) How is Social Responsibility manifesting in the managerial role; what are examples of dealing with externalities?
4) Where are laws and norms converging towards universal standards and where are they diverging? Why?
5) How does the increase in governmental regulation affect corporations.
6) How does the increasing role of Non-Governmental Organizations affect corporations?
7) Where can managers find the resources to help work through these complex issues?

Speaker: Kimberly Wiefling Founder, Wiefling Consulting Author, Scrappy Project Management In this workshop we’ll explore how to powerfully reframe situations and events in order to increase our professional effectiveness, energize ourselves, inspire others and attract our next opportunity. Top 6 Qualities Hiring Managers Look for in Candidates
Kimberly Wiefling is the author of one of the top 100 project management books in the US, "Scrappy Project Management: The 12 Predictable and Avoidable Pitfalls Every Project Faces", and the founder of Wiefling Consulting, LLC, a scrappy global consulting enterprise committed to enabling her clients to achieve highly unlikely or darn near impossible results, predictably and repeatedly. Her company has helped individuals, teams, and organizations realize their dreams through a combination of courageous leadership, project management excellence, sheer determination, and plain old stubbornness. She has worked with companies of all sizes, including one-person ventures and those in the Fortune 50, and she has helped to launch and grow more than half a dozen startups, a few of which are reaping excellent profits at this very moment. She spends about half of her time working with Japan-based companies that are committed to developing truly global leaders. Kimberly's leadership workshops are extremely popular with her Japanese clients, who are delighted to find the experience highly interactive, expressive and transformative, a refreshing change of pace from the lecture style typical in many Japanese companies.
Kimberly attributes her scrappiness to being raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and to the sheer luck of genetics—her whole family is seriously scrappy. (Thanks, Mom and Dad!) A physicist by education, she earned a master's degree in physics from Case Institute and a bachelor's in chemistry and physics from Wright State University.
Kimberly spent a decade at HP in engineering leadership and product development project management roles. She then spent four years in the wild and whacky world of Silicon Valley start-ups before leading one to a glorious defeat during the dotcom bust of 2001 as the VP of Program Management. (Indeed, the company was purchased by Google, but as luck would have it, for pennies on the dollar... Drat!) Vigorously scrappy, she reemerged from the smoldering remains of the "Silicon Valley Mood Disorder" to launch her own company, consulting worldwide from Tokyo to Armenia, as well as the once-again-vibrant Silicon Valley. Kimberly is the executive editor of The Scrappy GuidesTM, and a regular contributor to ProjectConnections.com. She is also the lead blogger on the UC Santa Cruz Extension's The Art of Project Management Blog. Feel free to contact her at kimberly@wiefling.com or check out her web site at www.wiefling.com. You can order her book on Amazon at [Link] and see the hilarious video of the nearly-true story of the precarious last hurdles that she overcame to get the book published at [Link].

The question isn't entirely academic. There are parts of the world where a mobile phone will, in the near future, be the computing platform of choice among large numbers of consumers. In parts of Asia and Scandinavia, this evolution is already underway. That suggests that the real question is not what is the future of mobile but what role are you going to play in that future?
SOFCON 2008 - The Mobile Future is the conference that can help you answer this question. It brings together industry experts and academics to explore the background, current status of, and evolving opportunities emerging in the mobile communications industry.
What are the Issues? What do consumers want? How can providers deliver it? What obstacles must be cleared? What partnerships make sense? What grand challenges need to be solved? How can Silicon Valley help close the gap with the rest of the world? Where should investors, creators, and customers of the mobile industry place their bets?
Who are the Participants? Everyone from industry experts and pundits to leading researchers and academics. Join us for an exciting day of interactive discussions that will offer a framework for the mobile future and pointers for creators, investors, and customers on where the best opportunities will be found.
SOFCON 2008 - The Mobile Future! 25 great companies, 2 great universities, 25 panelists, 300 attendees, 1 day.

The Asian Lunar New Year has just ushered in the Year of the Rat, Year 4706. Marking the beginning of the lunar calendar cycle, the Year of the Rat portends a time of rebirths and new beginnings. What better way is it then to celebrate by connecting with old friends and forging new friendships. GuanXi, the Chinese words for "connection", captures the Asian concept of the handshake and the relationship as the foundation of business success. And in the spirit of GuanXi, CSPA, SABA and VSVN, have arranged an exciting networking event within the halls of the venerable Computer History Museum.
Steve Westly, former California State Controller, Founder and CEO of the clean technology VC firm, the Westly Group, and a member of the board of Tesla Motors, is our esteemed keynote speaker for the evening. Appropriately, the theme of this year’s event is “Global Impact, Global Responsibility”. This event brings together professionals in technology, business, venture capital and law, and highlights the underpinnings of business in GuanXi. The evening will include a spirited performance, lots of food and drinks, as well as full access to all the cool displays and exhibits of the Computer History Museum.
Come and join us for a great evening of networking and camaraderie, and share in a raucous celebration for a prosperous 2008.

Enterprise solutions play a critical part in today's business environment. Companies have poured millions into enterprise solutions such as ERP, CRM, SCM and of course the web. They are now demanding more from these investments. They want enterprise solutions to be increasingly agile and intelligent, and rapidly adapt to change. The industry has responded with several new paradigms. There has been much talk about services oriented architecture. Add to that enterprise search, collaboration, business intelligence, composite applications, blogs, wikis and most recently mashups. Far from being technical improvements to current solutions, some of these newer technologies promise to deliver true business transformation.

Building and Monetizing Applications for Social Networks
Location: Juniper Networks, Pacific Conf. Room (Bldg 3) 1196 N Mathilda Ave, Sunnyvale, CA 94089 View Map
After bursting through the scene in 2002-04, social networks are currently in their next phase of evolution. While social networks have themselves proliferated to the point of being commoditized, the applications built on networks are just taking off. Facebook took the lead in 2006 by opening up their platform and allowing 3rd party developers to create applications. Hundreds and thousands of applications have been built since then not just on facebook but other social sites like Linked in. A more recent trend is building applications for the iPhone. More devices and platforms are expected to join this race to build the next killer app.
Our February event is focused on social network applications. We have great panel that will discuss how to build applications and what tools are available. More importantly, how can you make money off these applications.

SIPACON 2008 Annual Event
Safeguarding your career in 2009 and beyond!
The year 2008 was a watershed year for the global economy. We saw a precipitous crash of the financial sector, which took with it the rest of economy into a tailspin. Officially, the whole world is in a recession and has resulted in thousands of job losses, which continue to mount at an alarming rate. No one is spared and no one can predict what happens next. What all economists do agree on, however, is that this recession is unlike others in the remembered history! They also agree that 2009 will be no better. But, we all live in a country that thrives on opportunity and challenges. That is especially true of the Valley, where great companies and ideas are born in every crisis.
Given the dismal state of the economy and the gloomy outlook that goes with it, how can we protect our jobs, careers, and our future and look for opportunities to grow? Many large companies are laying-off employees; some even as a defensive measure. But, in this dire scenario are there strategies that stand out that offer you some protection, not merely for your survival, but also for your success? To get a perspective on these questions, we have invited, Dilip Saraf, LinkedIn’s #1 career coach, to help us unravel the challenges of 2009 and beyond. He will share his insights in leveraging your personal brand to not just safeguard your job, but to also use it to grow your career!
