Announcement
Gartner suggests that the web services software market
will reach US$1.7
billion in 2003. Web services are undeniably the center
of attention for the
software community.
Today's business imperatives are clearer than ever:
- beat competitors to market with new products,
- deliver personalized service,
- increase customer loyalty, and
- evolve at electronic speeds.
As business is becoming more decentralized, many companies
are using Web
services to become more efficient: to connect information
and transaction
systems; grant visibility and access of internal data
and processes; and
share business information with their partners, customers
and employees. Yet
many important issues remain unresolved, such as competing
architectures,
incomplete standards, unresolved security issues, and
limited developer
support.
The deployment of web services is very much in its infancy,
and many
questions remain unanswered:
- What are the practical implications for early adopters?
- What problems can web services help solve today?
- How quickly will Web Services be adopted, and what
is driving the adoption
timeline?
- What is the impact of Web Services on Enterprise
Software Companies?
- What are the relative merits of Java and XML?
- What entitiestelcos, systems integrators, hardware
vendors, software providersare likely to dominate
Web services?
- Which vertical markets (e.g., industries) are most
likely to use Web
Services and what is attracting them?
- What pricing models work best in a Web Services computing
model?
- As more and more companies adopt Web services, venture
capitalists see
money to be made. Which companies are they watching?
