As someone once said, no man is an island and this is truer now than ever before. In todays complex world, the ability to interact and work well with others, the capacity to clearly communicate ideas, the skill to sell an idea or concept and the talent to negotiate a desired outcome are all as important as pure technical ability. These factors are critical when dealing up, down and sideways in a organizations involved with complex technologies or bodies of knowledge, where one person can not possibly know or do everything. Being a successful leader, manager or entrepreneur is predicated on a competency in these areas.

It is thus no surprise that companies are placing a high emphasis on the so called soft skills when looking for prospective employees. With the prevalence of standardized technical education and enabling technologies like the Internet, technical competency is a given. The differentiator thus becomes the personality traits or soft skills.

This discussion will spell out some of these new-millennium skills that are vital for finding a new job, retaining an existing job and enhancing a career or business venture. Suggestions, drawn for real-life experiences by the speaker, will be offered on how to improve these skills.
