Hi Folks,

It's me with your occasional Ventcap update. A lot of exciting things are
happening on the horizon. The main reason being that we have a new team of
dedicated volunteers who are as excited about the possibilities of this SIG,
as I am.

Two firm events have been finalized. The reason I say two and not more, at
this stage, is because I am a firm believer in the maxim that do a few
things and do it well and keep trying until you get it right, rather than do
a lot of things and make a mess of it all.
So definitely more than two events are at the conceptualization stage, but
two is what we will concentrate on right now.

The first one is on June 26, 1999, at the HP Auditorium, between 4:00 p.m
and 7:00 p.m. This is a talk on the "Effective Business Plans." To add a
practical dimension to this talk, we are not having an MBA professor give
this talk, but rather that ultimate yardstick of an effective plan, a
VC(Venture Capitalist), give the talk. The VC in question is Susan from the
firm of Onset Ventures. The seeds for this talk were sown at the VC
one-on-one we organized in December of 1998. As most of us are aware, none
of the applicants were successful at that stage. On obtaining a feedback
from Onset, we were informed that the reason was not due to the person or
the project in question (those we were assured were of the highest order),
but the business plans needed some work. In order to address that we have
organized this talk. So mark your calendars and be there.

The second event soon after, is an "Effective Business Plan", but the
difference is the dimension of the speaker. This time it is a talk by a
person, who has worked as a VC and is now part of a start-up and who has
been successful in procuring finance, through his own effective business
plans. The speaker is Reza Moazzami, President and CEO of ShortWare Inc. On
the same day we also have a talk on protecting your Patents and Copyrights,
by Anirma Rakshpal Gupta, who is an attorney with a specialization in
Intellectual Property. This segment is tentative at this stage, depending on
the availability of the speaker Anirma. The date is tentatively set on the
second weekend of August, but will be confirmed by Rajesh, who besides being
an active SIG volunteer, is in charge of the actual reservations of the HP
auditorium.

The volunteers of this SIG had a brief meeting on Saturday, March 27, 1999
and some of the questions and topics which came up were :

1) Tushar, in Seattle, ( the man who sends us those wonderful and
informative articles on the VC world)- question for you Tushar, Do you
maintain a data base of all the articles you have sent till date? If yes
could people in the Ventcap list obtain it ?

2) Rajesh suggested that it is time for the Ventcap group to do more than it
is doing till date (we all agree) and for starters if all you subscribers in
this group can send in your areas of expertise and specialization, we can
maintain a list of whom to contact in case there is a question. So we need a
volunteer to maintain this database on the internet. I shall start by giving
my area of specialization. I administered and was in charge of a mutual fund
(just like a VC fund) with Merrill Lynch in Canada. So my specialization is
in the area of administering and the operational aspect of running a VC
fund.

3)An offshoot of the above is that once we have the database we know what
our resources are and hence decide on what kinds of project the SIG can
undertake .

4) Rajesh also suggested (man the guy is all charged up, I like that) that
we have regular monthly mixers among the members of the Ventcap group, where
there will be no guest speakers (they do, lets face it bore you on a Sat.),
but just pure interaction among the members. I'm all for this, although I
may not be able to make it myself, but let me have your input, so that the
current active volunteers can get down to organizing this.

5) On that note we always have the need for more active volunteers, so
please do sign up. Ok I admit I am lazy and hate to do work, but at the very
least that way, if we have more people, we can do a lot more.

6) Finally we received the following e-mail and I would like your view on
whether we should support or jointly organize this event:
FYI,
The Asia Pacific Research Center is planning a conference on accessing
> > venture capital into India. Would SIPA be interested in participating?
A
> > draft or "bogey" agenda is attached for your information and comments.
> > The
> > time-frame is this summer.
> >
> > Thank you.
> > Rafiq Dossani. << File: Seminar_agenda_Mar_12.doc >>

7) Finally, finally, finally. Folks I am suffering from an excessive
'Thank-You" syndrome. Just like the Oscars, as is the case with a lot of our
community events, everyone thanks, everyone, for days and months to come. I
don't want to get caught in this. But just once. Thank -you to the current
and future volunteers for making the future of this group look exciting.

Got to rush for that game of squash now(just shows where my priorities in
life lie)

Regards,

Vivek Kumar
